Public holidays are taken very seriously in Crete, and a lot of retail outlets and other institutions close. Restaurants and bars largely remain, open as well as some tourist shops, but if you are self catering or are likely to need something during a public holiday you would be well advised to err on the side of caution and buy it the day before
